The Viking's chief, Timandahaf, misinterprets his adviser's words and declares they must find a "Champion of Fear", believing that if the tribe were to become great cowards, they'll be able to fly and become invincible. The tribe's adviser, Cryptograf, concludes that their enemies have all fled, stating that "fear gives you wings". The English dub of the film involved the voices of Paul Giamatti, Brad Garrett, Sean Astin, Evan Rachel Wood, Greg Proops, and John DiMaggio.Ī succession of raids leaves a tribe of Vikings without anyone to fight against them.

The original French cast included the voices of Roger Carel, Jacques Frantz, Lorànt Deutsch, Sara Forestier, Pierre Palmade, and Marc Alfos. The adaptation of the novel's story included new characters, and anachronist references about modern technology, while the film also makes use of cover versions of pop songs, such as Get Down on It by Kool and the Gang, Survivor's Eye of the Tiger, and Super Freak by Rick James. The plot concerns Asterix and Obelix trying to train the nephew of their village's chief, only to find themselves rescuing him from a tribe of vikings who believe him to be a Champion of Fear. The film is a loose adaptation of the story of the comic album Asterix and the Normans, which was written by René Goscinny and illustrated by Albert Uderzo. Cowardly Goudurix will have ample opportunity to skirt his manly responsibilities until he has to impress the girl.įour years in the making on a budget of E22 million ($27 million), animation hews fairly closely to the look of the hand-drawn comics. Grossebaf’s proto-feminist teen daughter Abba (Sara Forestier) stows away on her dad’s ship, intent on emancipation and adventure.

Machiavellian Cryptograf’s muscle-bound dunce of a son, Olaf (Michel Vigne), provides goofy laughs as he fails to grasp even the most basic task, let alone his dad’s plot to usurp power. Meanwhile, far to the north, ferocious Viking Grossebaf (Marc Alfos) misunderstands his elderly advisor, Cryptograf (Pierre Palmade). When the wily advisor remarks that “Fear gives wings,” the fearless Viking takes a figure of speech literally and assumes that if he can round up a scaredy-cat, he and his fellow sea-going pillagers will be able to fly. He shows up with his pet bird, who delivers messages Flintstones-style by pecking text into the nearest piece of wood. No easy task, as Goudurix - the very early prototype of an ecology-minded surfer dude - couldn’t be less interested in hunting wild boar and clobbering hostile invaders.

Asterix and Obelix are assigned to make a man of him. The village chief’s nephew Goudurix (Lorant Deutsch), whose dad is a famous warrior, arrives from Lutece. Jovial pussycat Obelix (he of the super-strong brawn and bottomless appetite, voiced by Jacques Frantz) and his best friend Asterix (the smart warrior whose strength is unbeatable after a gulp of magic potion, voiced by Roger Carel) live in the last Gallic village to resist the Romans, circa 50 B.C.
